Baseball: Germantown upsets Falls, qualifies for state

The Germantown boys baseball team upset Menomonee Falls in a sectional final July 24, 2-1.

Germantown's two runs came off a home run in the third inning by Jimmy Doedens with Mike Fischer on first base. Menomonee Falls got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Cole Myhra singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a throwing error.

Germantown finished eighth in the 10-team North Shore Conference and was seeded sixth in the sectional. Germantown entered the sectional with a 12-16 overall record  and upset third seeded Hamilton 4-3 July 20. Germantown began July 24 with a 3-2 win over Slinger in a game that was extended eight innings.

Menomonee Falls was seeded first in the sectional and began the day with a 32-10 overall record. They opened sectional play with a 1-0 win over Brookfield Central. The game was on the verge of going into extra innings as Menomonee Falls had two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. But A.D. Gonzales doubled and scored on a flare to left field by Ryan Romens to sep up the game against Germantown.

The sectional games at Germantown were delayed a day due to heavy rainfall July 22. While the Saturday sectionals games were slated to begin at noon, they were pushed back until 1:30 p.m. due to field conditions.
