Heavy rains during the early evening hours of July 22 flooded several streets and caused damage to several structures in Menomonee Falls and Sussex.
In Sussex, 50 home owners reported damage to their properties, Interim Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said. Six businesses also reported water damage. In one apartment complex, an underground parking area flooded, damaging 21 vehicles. Flooding also occurred in the Village Hall basement and in the lower level bathrooms at the Youth Center building.
As of the afternoon of July 23, Smith said Champeny Road between Oxford Drive and Locust Street was flooded. He noted that a person had rowed a canoe down the street earlier in the day. By the afternoon, flooding near Ivy Avenue and Locust Street and in the Bowling Green apartments had subsided.
In Menomonee Falls, Lannon Road from Lisbon Road to just north of Silver Spring Drive was closed due to flooding. Also during the day, Lisbon Road east of LIlly Road and Main Street between Menomonee Avenue and Maple Road was closed due to flooding.
Village officials requested that anyone with items damaged by the storm place the items at the curb along with regular household trash. However, major appliances that were damaged should not be placed for pickup but should be dropped off at the Orchard Ridge Landfill, W124 N9355 Boundary Rd., Germantown for disposal. The disposal of those items will cost $15.
All Waukesha County beaches were closed due to high water July 23. County officials also requested that anyone with flood damage to their home or business call 2-1-1 and provide a contact name, phone number and address as well as information on the type of damage.
The opening night of Falls Fest in Menomonee Falls was called off due to inclement weather that hit the area July 22.
Jeff Steliga of Falls Fest noted that this is "the first time in 18 years" the event has been called off for an evening.
"We got hit by rain like you would believe - it was everywhere," he said.
Steliga said a few plants in a mini-golf area were knocked down and stakes from a few tents were uprooted.
"We made it through pretty good," he said.
The festival continues tonight (July 23) through July 25.
The weather also prompted the WIAA summer baseball sectionals, which had been scheduled for July 23 at Germantown High School, to be delayed a day. Menomonee Falls will play Brookfield Central in the noon game while Germantown will play Slinger in a 2 p.m. matchup. The winners of those two games will meet at 4:30 p.m. to decide who will qualify for the state summer baseball tournament in Wausau next week.
