A second night of comebacks came up short for Menomonee Falls in a state Division I semifinal match against Muskego Nov. 5.
Menomonee Falls lost to Muskego 21-25, 25-17, 24-26, 23-25.
After scoring 13 straight points in the third game against against Burlington in the quarterfinal round the previous evening, Menomonee Falls was on the verge of a similar comeback. Behind two games to one and trailing 18-11 in the third game, Menomonee Falls scored five straight points that forced Muskego to call a time out. Menomonee Falls continued the comeback and tied the game at 20-20, staying within two points of Muskego until the Warriors converted the final two points to advance to the championship.
"Down 18-11, we did what we've been doing all year: We showed a lot of heart," Menomonee Falls Coach J. C. Bruns said. "Trailing two games to one, down 18-11, we could've packed it in, but we battled back, battled back with a lot of effort and determination."
"It just wasn't our night tonight," he added.
After losing the first game, Menomonee Falls evened the contest as Abby Becker scored six of the Indians points to open up a 17-12 lead for Menomonee Falls. The teams stayed close in the third set, but Muskego scored the final four points of the third game, setting the stage for the fourth game.
Menomonee Falls ends its season with a 45-6 record, one which includes a Greater Metro Conference title and the first appearance in a state semifinal since 2006.
"It's the most fun I've had, it's the best team I've had, the best group of girls I've had in terms of fun to be around and coach — it will have some pretty good memories," Bruns said.
